Drug Uses
Nexium is a powerful proton-pump inhibitor (PPT). Nexium acts selectively on the final phase of gastric juice production and minimizes its acidity and volume. Nexium is assigned to patients older than 12 years for:
- Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Management of duodenal ulcer disease caused by H. Pylori bacterium
- Prevention of relapses after esophagitis treatment
To treat and prevent intestinal ulcers associated with NSAID use, as well as for long-term management of Zollinger Ellison syndrome (ZES), Nexium is recommended for adult patients only.
The recommended daily dose of Nexium is administered after assessing the severity of intestinal diseases and it usually ranges from 20 to 40mg per day. The maximum dose of Nexium is 160mg at 24-hour interval. The average duration of Nexium use is 6 weeks.
Missed dose
If over 12 hours passed after a missed dose of Nexium, do not take this proton pump inhibitor and go back to the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of Nexium to compensate for the missed one.
More Information
Nexium can be prescribed for children aged 1 to 12 years. For the convenience of dosing in children, they should be prescribed with Nexium oral suspension (2.5 mg, 5mg or 10mg).
Storage

Nexium Side Effects
