The nucleoside analogue of thymidine is phosphorylated by cellular enzymes to its active form - stavudine triphosphate. Suppresses reverse transcriptase of HIV, cellular DNA polymerases (beta and gamma), inhibits the synthesis of viral and mitochondrial DNA. It is active against HIV-1.
